Next month, FAI's Executive Director Jonathan Morduch will join the World Bank's Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics (ABCDE) in Washington, D.C., for a session on labor market dynamics in low- and middle-income countries—questions FAI has been working on through the Small Firm Diaries and earlier household research.
The theme of ABCDE 2026 is “Jobs for the Next Generation.” It focuses on how economies in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East will absorb the large cohorts now entering working age, with sessions on growth, skills, and the barriers that keep people out of the labor market.
Jonathan will speak on the first day of the conference (June 16) in a session on "Facts About Job Dynamics," alongside Gabriel Ulyssea (Associate Professor of Economics at University College London) and Gaurav Chiplunkar (Assistant Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia). Aaditya Mattoo, Director of the World Bank's Development Research Group, will moderate.
